Section Reflection
Saturday, February 10
The section teams battled it out yesterday at Baker Park against difficult competition and some stiff windchill. The boys team continued improving their performance at every meet this year with a 5th place finish in a field of 14 (or so) teams, winning a tie-breaker with St. Cloud Cathedral. The girls team went in aiming for the section championship and came close, just 11 points behind Little Falls. They tied with Wayzata for second after the pursuit but finished in third after a tie-breaker (adding up the top four finishing times).
Congratulations and best wishes to our individual state qualifiers!
GRANT, HANNAH, NICOLE, JENNY
Here is a link to the complete meet results. Also, check out the skinnyski.com main page for a photo of Chris during the classic race! Lots of other photos are uploaded in the results page.
Thanks to all the parents who supported the team and brought food...Maple Grove is getting a reputation for having the best AND most meet treats!
Thanks to all the teammates who came out and cheered on the skiers out on the course, especially on the Wall...we always knew at the finish line when a Crimson skier was going to be coming around the last corner because we could hear a roar coming from the fan club!
And finally, a huge thank you to Kirstin for standing at the finish line through the entirety of each race, fulfilling Maple Grove's volunteer responsibility by recording skiers' times, thus enabling all the parents to focus on their own skier.

Day Two
Thursday, December 28
Trees were jumping out, corners were approaching quickly, tracks disappearing...an adventurous night classic ski at ABR Trails tonight.
Now, all safe at the Abbey, dinner finished and on our way to bed.
First Day
Wednesday, December 27
After a slight delay getting the bus loaded, and the addition of the Pearson's van to accomodate the skis that didn't fit under the bus, the Maple Grove Nordic Team got on the road and arrived at Wolverine Trails outside Ironwood, Michigan around noon. We classic skied for a couple of hours and are now at the Abbey in Bessemer, eagerly waiting for supper to be served. We've suggested the use of inside voices, but it seems to be taking a while for the suggestion to take effect. No mishaps or missing equipment to report at this point!

A packing reminder: Be sure to pack your gear so you can carry it by yourself in one trip.

Tuesday, December 26

No meet at Elm Creek this week again but we will let you know as soon as we are able to practice there. For tomorrow, plan to meet at the wax room to get the summer wax off your skis and work on technique.
Updated volunteer sheet here; we could still use a few parents too. Thanks to everyone who signed up!
The winter trip is full! More information will be coming soon.

A Bike, a Song, and a Dog Biscuit: the Ride 'n Tie Round-up
Monday, December 4
Six fast girls led the way at the Ride n' Tie competition on Saturday morning; defending champs Bridget Hines and her aunt Lisa finished in first place, followed by Whitney and Hannah, and then captains Jenny and Nicole. Despite the brisk windchill, 22 people competed, with lots of first time participants including 4 junior high teams and a couple of seniors (ask Taylor about his detour!). Thanks to the Elberts for the treats at the end of the race and parents Mary Lou, Leeni, Judy, and Kurt for standing around in the cold and manning the stations along the route.

All senior high skiers: The team needs your help!
Our team has committed December 15 to bag at Cub, and December 22 and 23rd to bag at Byerlys.
Practice will be rearranged so you can be there Friday after school so don't let that stop you from signing up. Be sure to wear team shirts so we are visible. These dates are prime for grocery shoppers before the holidays so the potential is huge! Join your teammates for the fun, and lower the cost of your winter trip.
We've got this fund raiser in the bag!
Sign up now! Email or tell Nicole what shift you and your friends will cover.
Sign-up sheet.

Meet at Eastman Nature Center at your assigned time.

Baby, It's Cold Outside
Wednesday, November 29
Despite the lack of the white stuff, it definitely felt like winter this afternoon when everyone got to spend some quality time in the outdoors. In order to get the most out of our workouts, it is important for each athlete to be prepared for cold weather. Dress in layers; look for poly blends that will trap heat and wick away moisture, like UnderArmour.
You MUST bring warm clothing and a HAT and GLOVES!!!
Every day. Now.

Almost Thanksgiving and we are Very Thankful for the Donations
Tuesday, November 21
First off an observation: Great work from all the skiers this week. We saw some serious effort on the rollerskis, intervals and strength training. Rollerskiing is tough, and a little scary. Everyone has been safe and serious about learning this new skill and working on refining their technique. The first day on snow is going to be a much easier transition for the first year skiers this year. Remember helmets from this point forward lest you are banished to grass skiing forever.
Now for more Great News! With only about one third of the families represented so far we have raised a total of $2426. We have made our primary goal of raising enough money to know that we can start our new uniform journey. Thank you so much for all the donations!
Now that we know we have enough to get started we have a little more time to raise money. Dont feel if you missed the deadline, you cant participate. All money raised is more skiers in new uniforms, fewer uniforms to get next year and the potential of getting us into a lower per uniform cost bracket, thereby getting us even more for our booster dollars.
Anyone have influence over the weather? !

One Week Closer to Snow
Friday, November 17
Thanks for the great effort and attendance at practice this week and for EVERYONE getting their trail pass money in! Keep the pass in a place you will remember; they will be checking more often this year at Elm Creek. It is made of extremely tough material; it won't tear or fall apart so there is no need to laminate it.
Here is the letter regarding the optional tax-deductible booster club donation to help outfit the team with new uniforms. Any amount you are able to donate will be greatly appreciated. If you are interested in purchasing the additional clothing items such as a race jacket or hat, please send in your down payment by Tuesday. After we know how many we are ordering, we will receive sample clothes for you to try on for sizing. For additional information, go to podiumwear.com.
Due Tuesday, November 21!!

Taking Care of Business
Tuesday, November 14
Be sure to bring in $20 (or a check to MGNT) for your trail pass by this THURSDAY.
Otherwise, you can purchase one at Elm Creek for $40.
We handed out uniforms today and the downside of having a nice-sized team is that there weren't enough to go around. It is no fun to not get a uniform and it is important for everyone to feel like they are part of the team so we are addressing this problem and will work something out!!
Information about the winter trip will be available at practice today and registration will begin immediately.

Let's Get It Started!
Monday, November 13
Great job to everyone on the Fitness Testing! Our team is really growing and we are off to a good start...34 high school and 19 junior high skiers showed up today.
Tomorrow we will be handing out uniforms and setting up the wax room with some indoor strength activities if time permits. The wax room is not heated so make sure you have warm clothes (think layers!).
Sign-up for the Winter Trip will begin this week. We only have room for 42 skiers so priority will go to returning skiers beginning with Seniors. Hopefully everyone who wants to go will be able to participate! A deposit of $100 is required to sign-up and registration ends on December 1.
Finally, thanks to all volunteers and diners at Noodles this evening! There was a good turn-out (we get 10% of sales) and it was a fun way to end the first day of the season.

Preseason Meeting Update
A couple of announcements regarding the meeting in the Forum Room Nov 1st:
1. Due to the very low response on the need for a 7:30 meeting, we will plan
to hold a 6:00 one only. Anyone that can't make the 6:00 should show up as
early as you can. You can show up at 7:30 but it will be a very abbreviated
version.
2. At the meeting there will be all sorts of things to sign up for and dates
to plan on. Bring your calendar and something to write with.
3. On www.skinnyski.com there is a description of the master plan for Elm
Creek as well as a survey. You should check it out and take the survey.
I'm not suggesting you vote any particular way. It's your park, and how you
want to use it should be reflected in the survey.
4. We are doing the Baker Square pie coupons fund-raiser again this year.
We're asking you to pay for coupons up front so bring your check book. This
is a much better time of year to try to sell them (just before
Thanksgiving).
5. There was a fair amount of equipment in the www.skinnyski.com
classifieds. You might want to check it out. Most of it is top end stuff.
That's it for now...See you Wednesday!

First update for the 2006-2007 Season!
Preseason Meeting!
Greetings, Don't let the few warm days here and there fool you - Winter will happen! I'm excited about it for SO many reasons! At the top of the list is this year's Conference Jamboree. It will be a varsity only race 12 skiers per gender per school. It will be one of the greatest ski race days we've had. Sprints, Skiathlon and Relay. Racing under the bridge, spectating from inside, tagging off, making the next round, transition from classic to skate skis and poles, higher speeds, longer races, constant action, big fire place, big fun! Jan 2nd, Don't miss it.
Our preseason meeting is less than a month away. If you know of anyone interested in skiing they should be at this meeting. Please pass the word. (if enough people have a conflict with the 6:00 PM start we can have another at 7:30, please respond)
November 1st

Parents/Athletes
6:00 PM
1. Registration is due in the athletic office before the athlete can work out with the team.
2. If your athlete was in a fall sport all they need to fill out is the emergency notification card.
3. If this is their first sport, there are red packets in both offices of the junior highs, and outside the athletic office of the senior high.
4. Make sure your athletes are healthy, we will get right into it on the 13th. A check up at the doctors might not be a bad idea; any injuries should get evaluated so they know where they are at, what they can do and what might not be a good.
5. Make sure equipment and clothing can all be found, is in good repair, and still fits.
6. Remember that each athlete will be responsible for their own training kick wax this year and will need, at minimum: a scraper, cork, and a can of "blue extra".
7. We practice outside in all kinds of weather; make sure your athlete is prepared with the appropriate clothing; the biggest obstacles at this time of year are cold, wind, and rain.
8. A dry set of clothing for after practice including dry gloves and hats is also very important to a healthy athlete.
9. Spend time with your athlete each day to see how things are going for them in their study life, as well as with the ski team. Early adjustments are always easier.
All the coaches are super excited to get going. Thanks for the support.
